The quality of DCist has also declined in the under the leadership of Sommer, Martin, and Ryan. I used to read DCist frequently when Rob and Mike were the editors. Back in the day, DCist was a good source of information about things to do in D.C. without all the patronizing commentary. Really, I could go through the day without having some bratty hipster looking down at me because I drive a car around town. Yes, Ryan and Martin, I own a car and I have to use to get to work. I couldn't afford to live in the overpriced neighborhoods where these little DCist yupsters and their inferority complexes reside. No, the only neighborhood I could afford is not close to the metro at all.
As for the fat, goateed one, who probably has those sausages he calls fingers clasped around a can of PBR right now, well, fuck him too.
I can’t say I’m familiar with the previous editors of DCist before Ryan, but I do remember the blog previously being much more polite... but a bit toothless. Under Ryan, the tone seemed much more representative of the DC mindset as a whole, culminating in the smug self-congratulatory ass wipe that is Martin. What a hateful, miserable place the page became under his helm. Sommer doesn’t seem so wretched to me, but the commenters and contributors represent gloriously.
Now, with Sommer, who I guess is the current Editor In Chief, like I said, she doesn’t seem so horrible to me. Not that anyone could match Martin’s prickishness. Sure, I’ll attack her if she tries to cover Baltimore. That’s the whole point of this blog. As when she responded to this blog on DCist, it was obvious that her familiarity with Baltimore was that there is a harbor with some tourist attractions, and a giant nameless, faceless, featureless slum beyond. Hell, that is the perception of Baltimore everywhere. If that is all you are capable of seeing, what business do you have covering Baltimore at all? If you don’t know where the Poles, Greeks, Blacks, Italians, Yuppies, Yupsters, Hipsters, Ukrainians, old money rich folk, Central Americans, and the descendants of West Virginian factory workers live; if you don’t know where the Germans, the Irish, and the Jewish communities used to live and where they live today, if you don’t know what fuels the economy, if you are unfamiliar with the art scene, if you don’t know how any of these things interact or blend or what contributions these communities have had in the development of the city, than what business do you have covering Baltimore as though you are the blog voice of record? Are they capable of this because they know we like crabs, talk funny and say “hon” a lot? I keep chiding them to identify Baltimore’s Ist equivalent. As of yet, none of them have even been able to identify that. Not that I find this surprising, but if you can’t even identify Baltimore’s version of an Ist blog, being Washington’s Ist blog, how can you presume to speak of Baltimore as though it is their area of expertise... either as a city or as a blog? Besides, do Washingtonians really care anyway?
